Why Do Cats Love Climbing and Observing from High Places?

Cats are naturally drawn to high places. How much do they enjoy climbing? Sometimes, if you’re not careful, your cat might be found standing on doors, air conditioners, wardrobes, and even doing riskier stunts like getting stuck on chandeliers or clothes racks. Clearly, cats love this extreme sport of climbing. But why are they so attracted to elevated spots?

Reason One: Better View for Hunting Advantage

Even though domestic cats don’t need to hunt for food daily, this instinct is inherited from their ancestors. African wildcats, ancestors of domestic cats, lived solitary lives in deserts. They were small and needed all their wits to catch prey. To conserve energy while surviving harsh conditions, cats would hunt from places where predators and prey were less likely to spot them, such as trees. High perches allowed them to monitor large areas for hunting opportunities. Even big cats, like cheetahs, climb trees and sometimes store food up high.

Reason Two: Observing Distant Scenery

Kittens are naturally curious. They want to see everything, even following you to the bathroom! High vantage points allow them to see the world in detail. Although cats’ overall vision isn’t exceptional, their motion detection is excellent, enabling them to track moving objects from afar. Watching traffic, people, and birds from above can be highly stimulating for a cat. It might even feel like the entire city belongs to them.

Reason Three: Ensuring Safety and Comfort

High places reduce the likelihood of threats from other animals or disturbances from humans. Elevated spots provide a sense of security, making them ideal for resting or sleeping. Cats often prefer narrow, high areas, which feel even safer.

Reason Four: Displaying Power and Status

High perches are coveted spots. Cats have strong territorial instincts and enjoy demonstrating their strength. When in a dispute, a cat on a higher position often appears more dominant. In a cat’s mind, being above others signals power and authority. If your cat frequently observes you from a high place, it may feel a sense of superiority.

Reason Five: Hygiene Preferences

Cats have a natural awareness of cleanliness. High spots are usually cleaner than the floor, with fewer fleas, mites, and dust from food residues. Elevated places allow cats to stay cleaner. However, if a cat frequently rests in a high area, hair accumulation can attract mites again, so these spots should be cleaned regularly.

Safety Considerations

Although cats feel safer up high, this instinct can sometimes lead them into dangerous situations. Cats often equate 'high places = safety' instinctively, which can cause accidents. Many cats get stuck or fall from high places, resulting in broken bones or sprains. Cats’ front legs are not as strong as their hind legs for climbing down, so descending usually requires jumping or backing down. Jumping can cause injuries, especially in short-legged, young, elderly, or overweight cats. Backing down may work better on trees, but indoor surfaces are usually slippery and unsuitable.

How to Ensure Safety

  • 1. Observe the first few climbs. If the cat can easily jump up and down, there’s usually no problem.
  • 2. If the cat gets stuck, carefully bring it down and modify the environment. For example, add cushions below, provide stepping platforms, or install a tall cat tree to replace dangerous spots.

Climbing is a natural behavior for cats. Instead of scolding them for exploring high places, we should support and protect them, allowing them to enjoy their instincts safely.
